Meditation: Imagination hijacked
Star Trek Meditation: Imagination hijacked (And the Children Shall Lead)
TYPE: CBT
PURPOSE: This Audio-visual Meditation reminds us that, sometimes, visualizing does not help. Sometimes, when vedana arises, the best course is not to concretize the mood, vibe, or generalized anxiety into some objective particular. We gain a new epistemic satisfaction by having something to watch and blame, but its a projection. Bad.
CONTEXT: Sulu
KIRK: Helmsman, disregard what you see on the screen, what you think you see on the screen. Set a course for Starbase Four.
(Tommy does the fist thing and Sulu sees swords on the viewscreen.)
KIRK: Helmsman, did you hear me?
SULU: Yes, sir.
METHOD: Consider those times that your anger or fear or hate had enthralled you to an outrageous theory just to sustain itself. Your balanced, fact-computing faculty of reason was working well but made do with abstracta. But your emotions! They posited particular images. In a war between concepts and images, images will always win. Beware.
