An “argument” in support of the fluid
I have discerned a Mesmeric argument for the existence of a soul-supporting vital magnetic fluid:
- Subjectivity is prehensive conatus.
- Prehensive conatus is an Aristotelian substance. Its identity is preserved over time because it is a striving (trans-temporal prehension).
- Therefore, the subject is substance.
- My body is a vast plurality of mechanical processes, many of which are under the control of my unitary “I will ….” My “I will …” appears to cause various bodily movements—such as the movement of large-scale muscles, neuronal firing, endocrine secretion, and learned autonomic processes such as salivation and heart rate.
- The only way for the mechanical plurality of the body to be controllable by a unitary “I will …” is via some mediating third that is a spatially extended and unitary substance.
- Therefore, the subject rests on a physical fluid.
