PURPOSE: This Audio-visual Meditation Loop lets an important lesson from Spock sink in. In this age of fantasy-based Trumpian politics and wishful thinking, we need to remind ourselves that Positive Thinking is Bogus Tech—the most bogus of them all. Pretending, lying, posing are our favored means of procrastination and escape.
CONTEXT: The Trek Trio beam down to the site of a scientific expedition on planet Triacus and witness the death of the team’s leader, who is delirious. All the adults have committed suicide, and their children are dancing around happy. Kirk cannot understand how this can be, so Spock helps him:
KIRK: A child suppresses the fact that both parents are dead? I can’t believe it.
SPOCK: Humans do have an amazing capacity for believing what they choose and excluding that which is painful.
METHOD: Let Spock hammer it home.
